category: ART & ILLUSTRATION

Mark’s distinctive body of work demonstrates a commitment to graphic directness, the power of the imagination and the compulsion to draw. His approach is interdisciplinary, crossing fine art, illustration and urban art.

An influential pioneer of urban art he rose to success during the 1980s chronicling club culture. Andy Warhol described Wigan’s four-floor mural at London’s Limelight Club as HOT! and recommended him to also paint the Limelight Club in New York in 1986. Warhol introduced Wigan to the New York art scene and by 1987 Wigan was exhibiting in galleries and painting murals in nightclubs in London, New York and Tokyo where he also launched streetwear collections, and designed club interiors and sets for television programmes.

Wigan’s practice encompasses a wide variety of experimental approaches and media including painting, drawing, writing, photography, bookworks, sculptural pieces and context-specific installation. His work explores and responds to anthropology and subcultures. The vibrancy of urban nightlife resonates in his intricate drawings and paintings.
